Volleyball State Tourny

November 10th, 2009

The volleyballers are on the floor of the Xcel Center warming up fir their tilt against the Panthers of Parkers Prairie. The girls look good and the energy level appears higher then yesterday.

The Warrior Volleyball team opened the State Tournament today versus Lake of the Woods. Unfortunately for our Warriors, they did not get off to the start they planned; losing in 3 games: 23-25, 19-25, 18-25. The Warriors play Friday at 3pm versus Parkers Prairie The game will be streamed online.

Congratulations to Deer River Warrior Volleyball senior captain, Leah Benham for being selected All-State on Wednesday night at the State volleyball banquet!

Congratulaions to senior volleyball player, Becca Rudquist on her selection to the academic All-State team!

The Deer River Warrior Volleyball team won back to back Section 7A titles. This earns the ladies another trip back to the state tournament at the Xcel Center in St. Paul! The first game will be Thursday at 3:00pm versus Lake of the Woods. The Warriors are seeded 3rd this year at the tourny.

Tuesday, November 10th at 7:00pm in the DRHS Commons will be a community send off to wish the girls luck! The send off is open to all.

Individual Wrestling Sections

Sorry for the lack of updates last night, there were Technical Difficulties with site. Anyways the boys are East bound into a beautiful sunrise to do battle on Cloquet today.

The wrestlers still alive with a chance for a state birth with one loss are Cody Mickle, Scott Mickle, Cody Mentges, Gary Perrington, Jamison Evans and Neil Baumgarner. Kyle Wilson is in the championship at 145lbs.

The following wrestlers, wrestled well yesterday, but unfortunately lost twice and end their seasons. Bryce Ortloff, Cole Serfling.

These seniors Warrior wrestling careers ended yesterday valiantly Zach Olson (broken hand), Jeff Wilson and Dustin Wilson; thanks guys!

Well, the morning was not good for Warrior Wrestling. Cody Mickle got pinned in the first DR match of the day.

Then Cody Mentges, who had the lead at the time, severly sprained his ankle and was done for the tourny.

Scotty Mickle, already wrestling on two bum knees, won his match but may have injured his right knee more. This may have an impact on Scottys 3rd place and potential true second match.

Gary Perrington won his first match today and is soon wrestling for 3rd as well, but may have injured his clavicle.

Jamison Evans lost his first match of the day and will be wrestling for 5th.

Neil Baumgarner lost his first match today as well, ending his season.

Kyle Wilson will be wrestling for the 145lb championship here in about 90 minutes.

Jamison Evans just won his 5th place match 16-9.

So, here are the long awaited results!

Kyle Wilson. - 145lb, Section 7AA CHAMPION!! Kyle is state bound! Congratulations to Kyle!

Section 7AA individual wrestling tourny

The Warrior Wrestlers are in Cloquet today and Saturday for the chance to make it to the Minnesota State Wrestling Tournament at the Xcel in St. Paul next Weds. thru Saturday!

Wrestling in the first round are Bryce Ortloff, Scott Mickle, Gary Perrington, Cole Serfling, Jeff Wilson, Neil Baumgarner and Dustin Wilson. Our other five wrestlers have byes in the first round.

Bryce Ortloff was pinned by the top ranked wrestler in the state at 119lbs. Scotty Mickle score a tech fall (winning by 15) in his first match, winning 17-1 34 seconds into the 2nd period!

Next up are Gary Perrington and Cole Serfling.

Things are happening fast here in Cloquet! So, Gary Perrington scored a pin in his first match. Cole Serfling lost a heart breaker in the last 12 seconds 3-2, after leading 2-0 for most of the match!

Jeff Wilson lost 17-1 in his first match. Neil Baumgarner won his first 9-4. Dustin Wilson was pinned in his first match.

Cody Mickle lost 7-2 in his first match.

Well Scott won his 2nd match 9-2.

TRF Invite Final Results

January 25th, 2009

Sorry about the technical difficulties that last nights post didn’t post.  But here are the final results from the TRF Invite individual tournament.  The Warrior wrestlers did quite well with 9 of the 10 varsity wrestlers placing in the top 5!  The Thief River Falls Invite is an outstanding tournament that is well run and is in the best venue the boys will see until they make it to State.

Earning 2nd place honors were Cody Mentges 130lbs, Gary Perrington 135lbs and Kyle Wilson 145lbs.  Earning 3rd was Scott Mickle 125lbs.  Earning 4th place were Cody Mickle 112lbs, Zach Olson 160lbs and Neil Baumarner 215lbs.  Earning 5th place was Jeff Wilson 189lbs.  

On the JV side, Cole Serfling took the 145lb championship and Dustin Wilson placed 5th.  

As a team, the Warriors placed 4th, behind host and team champion Thief River Falls, BGMR and Crookston.

The guys did an exemplary job representing the Deer River community.

Parents Night is Tuesday in a duel versus Park Rapids.

The team enters  the last third of the season and with team  and personal expectations high, the intensity will increase as we continue to pursue our goals!

We’re just getting ready to enter the final round. In what has been a pretty good day for the Warriors, 8 wrestlers are going to place!

Wrestling for first are Cody Mentges at 130lbs, Gary Perrington at 135lbs and Kyle Wilson at 145lbs. Wrestling for 3rd are 112 Cody Mickle, 125 Scotty Mickle, 152 Jamison Evans, 160 Zack Olson, 189 Jeff Wilson, 216 Neil Baumgarner.

In the JV bracket, Cole Serfling, 145lbs is wrestling for the Championship and hwt Dustin Wilson is wrestling for 5th!

Thief River Invite 1st roumd

Well, the first round is in the books. Getting first wins were Cody Mickle, Gary Perrington, Kyle Wilson, Jamison Evans, Zack Olson for varsity. Getting 1st round byes were Scotty Mickle, Cody Mentges.

Winning on the JV side were Gage Rossbach by pin, Cole Serfling by pin and Lance Serfling had a bye.

The Warriors are in Thief River Falls this chilly morning to do battle in the TRF individual wrestling tournament at the Ralph Englestad arena. Expectations are high for the boys today, as we’ve had a good season so far and we placed well here last season. Stay tuned throughout the day for updates and photos from the Ralph.

Hibbing Invitational - The Sequel

The Warriors of Deer River are preparing to take on the Cougars of Centennial this morning in round 3 of the championship bracket.

The boys are feeling good and shooting for 3rd in the prestigious Hibbing Invitational. Stay tuned throughout the day for scores, commentary and pictures.

In round 3 the Warriors lost to Centennial 52-22. Afterwards, the Centennial coach commented that Deer River gave them on of the hardest matches of the season.

Winning for the Warriors were Scott Mickle, Cody Mentges, Cody Mickle and Zack Olson.

Up next for Deer River are the Tigers of Princeton for 3rd place. Stay tuned.

Hibbing round 2

January 9th, 2009

In a VERY close match with the Blue Jackets of Hibbing, the Warriors lost 37 - 31 The boys did Deer River proud fighting every match.

Earning wins for Deer River were Scotty Mickle, Cody Mentges, Gary Perrington, Kyle Wilson, Jamison Evans, getting his first varsity pin/win Cole Serfling, Zack Olson (forfeit).

Wrestling out of weight for the benefit of the team were Jeff Wilson and Neil Baumgarner, though they may have lost, they wrestled with grit and determination, earning everyones respect!

Tomorrow at 11:00 am the Warriors face 6th ranked Centennial (AAA)

The Warrior grapplers got back on the wining side with a 44-30 victory over Park Center. Scoring pins for Deer River were Scott Mickle, Cody Mentges, Gary Perrington, Jamison Evans, Kyle Wilson and Neil Baumgarner.
