Friday, February 27th

1. Enjoy dancing in a beautifully decorated scene to great music? How about laser tag, gladiator jousting, riding GIANT trikes, swimming, racquetball, volleyball, basketball, rock wall climbing, tennis, badminton or just hanging out watching movies and to top it all off dinner at the Ground Round? If all this sounds like fun, get ready for PROM 09 coming on MAY 2nd. Get your formal, your tux or your suit ready…Sign-ups will be coming in April!

2. FCCLA MEMBERS: ALL members should plan to attend the meeting next Tuesday, March 3rd during advisory. See Mrs. Passeri if you have any questions.

3. The Media Center will be closed today during Senior High lunch.

4. Campus Life will meet Monday Night at 7:00 p.m. at Cole Knudson’s.

5. Close-Up Students: The next meeting will be Monday, March 9th at 5:30 p.m. in the Commons.

7. To those who signed up for the Festival of Nations trip on May 1st, you need to turn in your money with your signed permission slip by Thursday, March 19th to Ms. Cortes.

8. AFTER SCHOOL STUDENT BUILDING USE: Students in the High School after 3:30 p.m. have one of three options. Those options are: (1) A High School sponsored activity; (2) Boys & Girls Club; and, (3) tutoring. Students not participating in these activities are allowed only in the Commons. More information: (1) Students are required to sign up for tutoring by 6th hour every day. (2) TEENS: The only time that you can be at Boys & Girls Club is from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 3:15 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. on Friday’s. Students who are unable to follow these rules will lose their privileges and will be required to leave the High School premises after 3:30 p.m.

9. The Baseball team is having a Pancake Feed at the Vets Club on Sunday from 7:30 a.m. – Noon. The cost is $5.00 for all you can eat.

10. Don’t forget the next Dollar Burger Night and Family Night will be Monday. Burgers will be served from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. and Family Night will be from 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.

11. Parent-Teacher Conferences will be Monday from 3:30 – 7:00 p.m.

12. There will be an ETS meeting (10-12 grade) on Monday during advisory in room 201.

13. The “Lost & Found” box is overflowing. We will be taking everything to Goodwill on March 13th, so if you are missing something, please check it out before then.

14. Happy Birthday this weekend to Nels Mainville and George Partridge-Gotchie!

Junior/Senior/Scholarship Information

1. The 2009-2010 ICC Scholarship Application is now available! It can be accessed from Itasca’s homepage (www.itascacc.edu) or if you would like the direct link it is http://www.itascacc.edu/financeedu/icclocalscholarship.cfm. The deadline for the scholarship application is March 6th at 4:30 p.m. There will be over 80 scholarships awarded ranging from $100-$2000. Many scholarships require that a FAFSA be on file at ICC by the scholarship deadline in order to be considered. Also, there are several scholarships that require a recommendation from a teacher, employer, coach, clergy, etc. One important change is that there is now a standard form on the scholarship application web page for students to print and give to the person completing the recommendation. Other letters of recommendation or forms will not be accepted.

2. Internship for Juniors! Grand Itasca Nursing Home is looking for summer interns. Pay will be around $9.00 per hour. Applicants should submit a cover letter, resume, and at least one letter of recommendation to Grand Village, ATTN: Ashley Carlson, 923 Hale Lake Point, Grand Rapids, MN 55744. Deadline for applications is April 30th.

3. Mike Staples Memorial Scholarship – $1000 for a student planning to enter Conservation Officer or Law Enforcement career. Deadline is April 15th. Application is available in the counseling office.

4. Zapping the ACT Test – Take this seminar to help you get higher scores on the ACT test. The seminar will be offered March 9th and 10th at Grand Rapids High School from 6:30-9:00 pm. Register with ISD 318 at 327-5730 or www.getlearning.org. The cost is $81.00 per person. For more information, contact Karen @ 218-327-5799.

5. The April ACT test registration deadline is Friday. Do NOT wait until the last minute to register online! The ACT connection is often jammed and frustrating if you wait until the last minute to register. Remember – if you have free or reduced lunch you can take the ACT test up to two times FOR FREE. See Mrs. Moll for an ACT test fee waiver form.

3. Today there will be approximately 110 junior high band students from Grand Rapids, Greenway, and Hill City here at DRHS for the 3rd annual Mass Junior High Band. Please excuse the following, Emily Emerson, Annalee Sundin, Ryan Juntunen, Neill Jerry, Aubrey Kaczor, Sky Mainville, and all junior high band students.

He is a preeminent player of the Native American flute, a traditional storyteller, cultural ambassador, recording artist and educator. He is most known for his hoop dance, The Hoop of Life. Since 1978, he has traveled to more than 80 countries to perform. Locke has served as cultural ambassador for the United States Information Service since 1980. He has recorded twelve albums beginning in 1982, and is an active member of the Bahá’í Faith. In 1990, he won a National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, the highest award granted to such traditional artists. www.kevinlocke.com

The Leech Lake Tribal Council is once again having the “Kids Perch Jerk” ice fishing contest tomorrow from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Big Winnie (Denny’s Resort) for all kids ages sixteen and under. Along with the regular ice fishing contest there will be a contest for the biggest, ugliest fish and many door prizes to be given away. There will also be free food for the kids.

9. Helen Hron, a former DRHS employee, is walking in the Autism Society of Minnesota 2009 Steps of Hope. If you would care to donate to this cause, please stop in the high school office.

3. CONGRATULATIONS to FCCLA members Emily Trout and Eva Gardner. Both girls advanced to the State Competition in April with their STAR events. Great job, gals!!!

1. On Wednesday, February 25th at 9:00 Kevin Locke will be performing at DRHS in the East Gym. Kevin Locke is Lakota (Hunkpapa band) and Anishinaabe. He is a preeminent player of the Native American flute, a traditional storyteller, cultural ambassador, recording artist and educator. He is most known for his hoop dance, The Hoop of Life. Since 1978, he has traveled to more than 80 countries to perform. Locke has served as cultural ambassador for the United States Information Service since 1980. He has recorded twelve albums beginning in 1982, and is an active member of the Bahá’í Faith. In 1990, he won a National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts, the highest award granted to such traditional artists. www.kevinlocke.com

4. National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine. 9-12th grade students can be nominated for positions in the NYLF for summer of 2009. Cost is @$2500. For more information go to www.nylf.org Nominations need to be completed by DRHS no later than Feb. 26, 2009. See Mrs. Moll for more information.

5. There will be a Student Council meeting today in room 210 during advisory. If you are in golf or ETS, you should go to that meeting.

The Leech Lake Tribal Council is once again having the “Kids Perch Jerk” ice fishing contest on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Big Winnie (Denny’s Resort) for all kids ages sixteen and under. Along with the regular ice fishing contest there will be a contest for the biggest, ugliest fish and many door prizes to be given away. There will also be free food for the kids.

9. Parent-Teacher Conferences will be Monday, March 2nd from 3:30 – 7:00 p.m.

10. Helen Hron, a former DRHS employee, is walking in the Autism Society of Minnesota 2009 Steps of Hope. If you would care to donate to this cause, please stop in the high school office.

11. The Spanish Club has cookie dough for sale. If interested, please see a Spanish Club member.

2. Zapping the ACT Test – Take this seminar to help you get higher scores on the ACT test. The seminar will be offered March 9th and 10th at Grand Rapids High School from 6:30-9:00 pm. 1. The Media Center will be closed today during Senior High lunch.

2. Congratulations to Ty Vickerman! Ty has been accepted into the INSPIRE 2008-2009 Online Community (OLC)! The OLC is INSPIRE’s centerpiece, providing a place for INSPIRE students to interact with their peers, NASA experts and education specialists. Through grade-level-appropriate educational activities, chats and the discussion board, students and their families will be exposed to the many careers and opportunities at NASA. The OLC also provides parents resources designed to help them champion their student’s education and career goals. There is also a STEM summer program run by NASA Ty will be eligible to apply for.

3. We need four more sign ups to go to Giants Ridge on Tuesday. Cost $29 for lift and rental, $17 snowboard rental only, $18 ski rental only, $17 for lift ticket only. DRHS can ski from 9 am – 4:30 pm. Sign up with Kathy in the Community Education office #207.

4. Valentine candy grams! Will be sold TODAY during both lunch hours in the concessions area. Candy Grams will be delivered during 7th hour! By some today.

5. Locker cleanouts will be done the final week of February. Students will be required to clean their lockers and remove any writing from the lockers and/or doors. Cleaning supplies will be on hand the day of the cleaning. Any writing/lockers that require a janitor to clean will be assessed a $10 fine similar to end-of-year penalties. The dates for the cleanout are: Tuesday, February 24th – 7th and 8th grade students, Wednesday, February 25th – 9th grade students, and Thursday, February 26th – 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students.

-First Plan of Minnesota – $1000 scholarship, parents must have health coverage with First Plan of Minnesota, pursuing a career in health care, HS senior, application in Mrs. Moll’s office. Deadline is April 15, 2009.
