Wednesday, April 29th

1. Any sophomore interested in helping out with the senior citizen prom on May 4th must sign-up in the office today. We need all sophomores to help in some way in order to make the day successful for our guests. You will not be allowed to attend the meeting tomorrow if your name is not on the list. If you have any questions feel free to ask Eva Gardner or Marilyn Schanhaar.

2. Feel like getting in shape and being part of a great team? Then become a Deer River Warrior FOOTBALL PLAYER. There is a sign-up sheet on my door (room 218). Students (grades 9-12 next fall) that sign up will have a meeting during advisory tomorrow in my room. Coach Marleau

3. Seniors attending the senior class trip must have ALL of their money in for their DVD’s as well as their trip money by FRIDAY. If you do not have your money in by this time you will NOT be going on the trip, NO EXCEPTIONS. Questions regarding the trip see Mr. Hermel.

4. Deer River Floral is offering a “Prom Boutonniere/Corsage Special”. Boutonnieres are $6.95 and Wrist Corsages are $16.95. Please stop in and order yours today!

5. FYI: School will be dismissed at 1:15 p.m. on Friday, May 8th.

6. Any student in grades 9-11 interested to serve on the Deer River High School Site team, please pick up an application in the high school office. This is an at large position to be served with Student Council representatives. The Site Team is made up of teachers, custodians, parents, etc., that meet once a month after school and the team’s purpose is to make suggestions on school policy and connecting the school to the community. Students must have a minimum GPA of 2.0 and good attendance. Applications are due on Friday. Students get paid $25 per meeting. The position will begin in October 2009.

7. Adopt A Highway for Everette Armstrong will be Saturday. Meet at Gibb’s Wild Rice on Highway 46 at 10:00 a.m. Wear boots and gloves as it may be wet in the ditches. Thank you for all your support. The Armstrong’s

Those options are: (1) A High School sponsored activity; (2) Boys & Girls Club; and, (3) tutoring. Students not participating in these activities are allowed only in the Commons. More information: (1) Students are required to sign up for tutoring by 6th hour every day. (2) TEENS: The only time that you can be at Boys & Girls Club is from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 3:15 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. on Friday’s. Students who are unable to follow these rules will lose their privileges and will be required to leave the High School premises after 3:30 p.m.

Activity/Athletic Information

1. If you are interested in joining Football Cheerleading, please sign up in the office by Wednesday, May 6th. The sign-up sheet is on Margie’s desk.

2. The Warrior baseball team won their fourth straight game defeating Littlefork Big Falls last night 6-3. Tyler Erzar pitched a complete game allowing only four hits. He also went three for four at the plate. Dane Heig had four RBI’s while Luke Benson, Bryce Lyytinen, and Dane had two hits each. Cole Knudson had a double off of the fence.

The B Squad also won for the fifth straight time by beating the Vikings 19-2.

3. Junior/Sen Congratulations to the Jr. High Track Women and Men who took first and second in a field of seven teams at the Deer River Northland Jr. High Invitational on Tuesday, April 28, 2009. Scoring for the War-Eagles Women were:

1. ATTENTION ALL PROM GOERS!! There will be a mandatory prom meeting for ALL those going to prom today in the art room during advisory. Important information will be distributed.

Those options are: (1) A High School sponsored activity; (2) Boys & Girls Club; and, (3) tutoring. Students not participating in these activities are allowed only in the Commons. More information: (1) Students are required to sign up for tutoring by 6th hour every day. (2) TEENS: The only time that you can be at Boys & Girls Club is from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 3:15 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. on Friday’s. Students who are unable to follow these rules will lose their privileges and will be required to leave the High School premises after 3:30 p.m.

Activity/Athletic Information

2. The following golfers are to be released at 2:15 p.m. today for a golf meet in Bemidji: Michaela Herfindahl, Becca Rudquist, Emily Rudquist, Andrea Vickerman, Travis Croaker, Eastan Marleau, Derick Mauser, Morgan Pouch, Gage Rossbach, and Danny Wait.

3. The Warrior baseball team won their third game in a row defeating the Aitkin Gobblers 6-5 at home last night. Travis Kane pitched a complete game victory striking out six. Ty Vickerman drove in the game winning run with two outs in the bottom of the sixth. He had two RBI’s for the evening. Jeff Wilson also had two RBI’s. Bryce Lyytinen scored twice. Tyler Erzar had six stolen bases as the Warriors racked up a total of thirteen stolen bases. The B squad also won for the fourth time in four tries shutting out Aitkin 8-0. Eythan Stangland pitched the complete game shut-out.

1. Attention NHS students: You need to get your lettering info to Mr. Houdek this week if you want to be considered for a letter!

2. Congratulations to FCCLA members Emily Trout and Eva Gardner on their great work at the State FCCLA Conference last week. The girls each brought home a silver medal, as well as Eva obtaining a GOLD medal in her Job Interview category, and was selected as an alternate to attend the National FCCLA Conference in Nashville in July. AWESOME JOB GIRLS!!

3. Congratulations to all music students for their performance in the state competition. The Choir and Band both received three “S’s”. The results for all performances will be posted on the wall by the office.

4. Would the person who left their bow in the office please pick it up before it goes to Goodwill.

5. There will be a 10th-12th grade ETS meeting today during advisory in the Boys & Girls Club room.

6. Apply for National Honor Society! Students in 10th-12th grade who are interested in being part of National Honor society – you MUST have a complete and updated Student Data Form returned to Mrs. Moll no later than today. See Mrs. Moll to get a blank Student Data form.

12. The Indian Education office will be touring UM-Duluth and UW-Superior on Wednesday. We will be leaving tomorrow afternoon and returning late on Wednesday. UWS is hosting the annual student art show Wednesday evening with a workshop at 3:00 on that same day. Please sign up in the Indian Education office. You must be passing all your classes and not have any recent discipline referrals. Space is limited to ten-twelve students, so sign up now. Graduating seniors and upperclassman have priority.

Activity/Athletic Information

1. The JH Golf meet for today has been cancelled.

2. The Warrior baseball team won the Hill City Invitational over the weekend defeating BEST (Babbitt Embarrass Tower Soudan) 20-0 and Northland Remer 2-1. Tyler Erzar pitched a four hitter and struck out nine in the first game. Dane Heig pitched the championship game against Remer allowing only four hits, no earned runs and struck out eleven. Luke Benson was five for five at the plate for the day to lead the hitters. Cole Knudson had an important double in the championship game. In the first game, 12 Warriors scored runs in the win. Tyler had three hits, while Gary Perrington, Dane, Luke, Cole, and Travis Kane had two hits each.

3. Coach Marleau needs basketball uniforms from the following players: Jodie, Kim, Kari, Raylene, Aspen, Theresa, Eva, and Tanisha. Please get them to him ASAP!

4. There will be a Volleyball meeting today during advisory in room 204 for those students who signed up. Please see list on e-mail.

1. The lunch menu for today is mini corndogs.

5. Looking for a great community service activity? Want to earn a 1/2 credit this summer? Help build a Habitat for Humanity Home! Dates are July 20-July31st. You must be 16 or older to participate. The building site will be in Deer River. See Mrs. Moll or Mr. Newton for more information. Applications are available in the counseling office.

8. Happy Earth Day 2009! Did you know that on the average, Americans replace their cell phones every 12-18 months? This creates over 30,000 tons of potentially hazardous waste. Do your part by recycling old cell phones.
Old cell phones can be dropped off in the HS Office or with Mrs. Passeri [room 101-102] where they will be sent off for proper disposal. Thank you!!!

9. The Lord’s Army Youth Group will meet this Sunday at the Good News Bible Church in Cohasset behind the Super America Car Wash. Meeting times are 5:30-8:00 pm. Will be discussing the ValleyFair trip planned for this summer and we will have a couple guest speakers.

1. There will be NO “B” squad baseball practice today.

3. The Warrior baseball team lost to Int. Falls 10-8 yesterday in a hard fought game. Luke Benson led the Warriors in hitting getting three hits including a double. Tyler Erzar, Gary Perrington, and Kenny Benham each had two hits. One of Kenny’s hits was a home run to left field. The B team won their third straight game by the ten run rule 13-3 over the Falls. The JH teams also won their games defeating the Falls, 5-4 in the 7th grade game and 5-3 in the 8th grade game.

4. Boys’ Basketball Cheerleaders: If you have not done so already, please turn in your uniforms and poms to Andrea Vickerman by the end of today.

5. Volleyball Players currently in grades 9-11 please sign up for a pre-season meeting to be held during advisory on Monday, April 27th in Room 204. Please make every effort to come to the meeting we have lots to talk about for next season. A list will follow later in the week.

Junior/Senior/Scholarship Information

1. Sherman Brown Memorial Scholarship – $600 scholarship for an American Indian graduating senior who excels academically, as well as being active in athletics in high school. Please see Mrs. Moll for an application.

2. Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe – Applications for Post-Secondary Grant Program. Seniors who are enrolled in Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe will have first priority in scholarship funding. Students who are descendents who are NOT enrolled can also apply – grants will be made depending on funding available. Also, a listing of other contacts for possible tribal college grants is available in the counseling office. See Mrs. Moll for more information.

3. Northland Vietnam Veterans Memorial Foundation – $700.00 scholarship. Recipient must be a family member of a Vietnam Veteran. A 500 word essay is required, and you must provide a copy of military service with the scholarship application. Deadline is May 1st. See Mrs. Moll for application.

Both girls will be competing amongst over 1500 other students from around the state to be 1 of 20 National Advancers. Good luck, girls!

8. Happy Earth Day 2009! Did you know that on the average, Americans replace their cell phones every 12-18 months? This creates over 30,000 tons of potentially hazardous waste. Do your part by recycling old cell phones.
Old cell phones can be dropped off in the HS Office or with Mrs. Passeri [room 101-102] where they will be sent off for proper disposal. Thank you!!!

10. The 2009 Destination Imagination season came to a close on Saturday at the state competition with our team finishing in 7th place of the 10 team field. The team performed flawlessly and impressed everyone with their creativity and performance. Many believed we were the best team in the competition and were shocked by our final score. Metro teams Columbia Heights and Maple Grove took the top honors with Orono, Hopkins, Roseville, and Mounds View finishing ahead of DRHS in order. Inver Grove Heights, Lakeview and Winona finished behind Deer River. Kyle Box, David Shaw, Frank Hellmann, Becca Rudquist, Ginger Lund, Elliott Gielen and Stephen Pederson represented DRHS with class. Seniors Kyle, David, and Frank will be missed on next year’s team. Congratulations on a great season!!

2. Congratulations Ty Vickerman! The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), has selected Ty to participate in the Tier 2B Residential Internship of NASA’s Interdisciplinary National Science Program Incorporating Research and Education Experience (INSPIRE) Project. The Interdisciplinary National Science Project Incorporating Research and Education Experience, or INSPIRE, is a multi-tiered student pipeline project for students in grades 9th through freshman year of college and their parent or legal guardian. INSPIRE is designed to provide grade appropriate NASA-related resources and experiences to encourage and reinforce student’s aspirations to pursue science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education and careers. The project also provides resources and information for parents to help them better champion their student’s goals. INSPIRE provides participants a rich online community, as well as opportunities to compete to participate in NASA/STEM Experiences. INSPIRE participants will be matched to one of the 10 NASA facilities, based on the participant’s place of resident and the NASA facility Area of Service. The internship will be at the Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio, starting on June 14, 2009, ending on August 7, 2009.

Junior/Senior/Scholarship Information

1. Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe – Applications for Post-Secondary Grant Program. Seniors who are enrolled in Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe will have first priority in scholarship funding. Students who are descendents who are NOT enrolled can also apply – grants will be made depending on funding available. Also, a listing of other contacts for possible tribal college grants is available in the counseling office. See Mrs. Moll for more information.

2. Northland Vietnam Veterans Memorial Foundation – $700.00 scholarship. Recipient must be a family member of a Vietnam Veteran. A 500 word essay is required, and you must provide a copy of military service with the scholarship application. Deadline is May 1st. See Mrs. Moll for application.

3. $1000 scholarship – student going into an automotive education program. $500 scholarship for a student with any career. North Central Tire Dealers Association. See Mrs. Moll for an application. Deadline for receiving applications is April 30th.

4. Will to Win Scholarship – 10 – $5000 scholarships for seniors who have asthma. The deadline is April 25, 2009. See Mrs. Moll for application!

5. North Country Power Scholarship – Seniors – If your parents are customers of North Country Power, you can compete for a North Country Power Scholarship. Deadline is April 17th – applications are available in the counseling office.

6. Lake Superior College has a Spring Open House – Today from 3-6. This is a great opportunity for students to learn more about LSC!

Daily Bulletin 4/16/09

Thursday, April 16th

1. During advisory today all 7th & 8th grade students (except those attending the volleyball meeting) are to report to the gym for a meeting.

2. SENIORS: The money for the Senior DVD’s along with the senior class trip money is due today to Mr. Hermel.

3. The Media Center will be closed during senior high lunch until Friday, April 24th.

4. Students interested in going to PROM must sign up by the end of today! Payments must be received by NOON tomorrow.

5. Attention Sophomores: If you are interested in meeting new people, traveling, seeing historic sites, and learning about our government then you are going to want to sign up for Close Up. Next week will be sign-ups for an informational meeting explaining what it is about. If you have questions talk with Close Up group members that just got back from Washington, DC or with Mr. Drotts. Sign-ups are on the office service counter.

6. GRACE House, the local homeless shelter, is in need of your pennies. They are having a “Penny Push” to raise money to provide safe lodging, food, and services to those in our community who need our help! There is a container on the Office Service Counter for your pennies.

7. “Student Special” – Fitness Center dues are $5.00 from today to May 29th! Pay at the Fitness Center, please!

8. Take the Fall is playing at High School Rocks, Battle of the Bands on April 19th at the DECC in Duluth. For tickets see Jimmy McCluskey. Tickets are $10 and $12.

9. FYI: Students on the “No Pass List” should not be in the halls unsupervised. This includes the Warrior Walk for Wellness.

10. During Senior High lunch hour, senior high students should not be in the hallways where junior high classes are being held.

11. AFTER SCHOOL STUDENT BUILDING USE: Students in the High School after 3:30 p.m. have one of three options. Those options are: (1) A High School sponsored activity; (2) Boys & Girls Club; and, (3) tutoring. Students not participating in these activities are allowed only in the Commons. More information: (1) Students are required to sign up for tutoring by 6th hour every day. (2) TEENS: The only time that you can be at Boys & Girls Club is from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 3:15 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. on Friday’s. Students who are unable to follow these rules will lose their privileges and will be required to leave the High School premises after 3:30 p.m.

Activity/Athletic Information

1. There will be a 7th & 8th grade VB meeting today during advisory in room 204. There is a list on e-mail of those students to be released.

2. Believe it or not, we are rescheduling the Spring Sports picture once again. Sooooo, it is now TOMORROW during advisory. Team members MUST be in uniform to be in the picture. Uniform may simply mean the team t-shirt, sweatshirt, jersey, etc. Check with your coach to see what he/she wants the team to wear. Don’t bother to show up if you aren’t wearing what the rest of your team is wearing. Meet in the Commons at the beginning of advisory. Seniors please stick around after the group picture for a seniors only picture.

3. The following Boys Basketball players need to turn in their uniforms ASAP: Eythan Stangland, Travis Kane, Eastan Marleau, Jace Swanson, Henry Hellmann, and Thomas Schultz.

4. Events for today:
