1. Stop Arm Violations: There is concern by local law enforcement about the number of school bus stop arm violations in the past weeks. Please review the Minnesota statutes listed below as a reminder of the expectations of drivers when operating a vehicle around school buses.
- MN State Statute 169.444 Safety of School Children; Duties of Other Drivers.
Misdemeanors - Failure to stop at least 20 feet away from a stopped school bus, that has its red lights flashing and the stop arm extended or passing, or attempting to pass, a school bus on the right side when amber lights are flashing.
- Itasca County fine amount is $380.00
Gross Misdemeanors - Passing, or attempting to pass, a school bus on the right side when the stop arm is extended and red lights are flashing. Passing, or attempting to pass, a school bus when a child is outside the bus, on the street or highway.
- In Itasca County, the standard fine is $980.00
