Friday, April 30th

1. Attention Prom Attendee’s: ALL students who are going to “After Prom” must have a signed permission slip (even if you are over 18)! Slips are on Ms. Evans’ door.

2. SENIORS: ALL money is due for the DVD’S on MAY 12TH. Remember they are $20 each and you must sell 2 in order to attend. MAY 12TH is the day when the FINAL list will be determined for who is going on the trip. May 19th payment is due in full. If it is NOT received by this date you will not be attending. Total cost to go will be $80 for the day. Remember you can sell more DVD’s to help eliminate the cost of the trip. Each DVD above 2 takes $20 off the cost of your trip. On the senior trip you will need some spending money for activities that are not covered (e.g.: mall, breakfast, paintball, pop/popcorn for the movie). Please share the plan with your parents and contact me with questions. If you do not want to go, please inform Mr. Hermel A.S.A.P.!

3. All sophomores and juniors are to meet in the commons during advisory on Monday. Mr. Colligan will be discussing college classes being offered at DRHS and being taught by DRHS staff.

4. The custodial staff at DRHS is looking for one additional student summer worker. If you are interested, please see Russ Bouchie for an application. The deadline for applications will be May 14, 2010.

5. Prom Attendees: You must pay Ms. Lynn before school or during advisory this week. Please do not interrupt her class.

6. Cedar Wild Resort is looking for two committed/reliable students for their summer housekeeping. The job entails mostly weekends, but sometimes during the week. If interested, contact Paulie at 246-8680 or www.cedarwildresort.com.

7. Students interested in meeting new people from around the United States, seeing historic sites, flying to Washington, D.C., and above all, having an experience of a life-time, should sign up in the office or Mr. Drott’s door. If you have any questions just ask any of the students that went in the Close-Up group, Mrs. Felosi, or Mrs. Evans. We will be having a meeting on Monday in Mr. Drott’s room.

8. Attention Sophomores- If you are interested in volunteering to help with the Senior Citizen Prom, please sign up on the community education door, by Mr. Dahlberg’s classroom.

9. Open Library will be on Monday and Wednesday nights, NOT the usual Tuesday and Thursday. The library will be open on May 3rd and 5th, and then will go back to Tuesday and Thursday.

10. Free enrollment to the Boys & Girls Club this month. Current club members are invited to renew their existing membership for FREE! Any interested students who are not members are encouraged to join at no cost!

11. The Media Center will be closed during senior high lunch until further notice.

12. Prom attendees: Jessica’s Bridal will be in the commons the Monday (May 9th) after prom to pick up tuxes.

Athletic/Activities Information:

1. The Warrior baseball team took a 6-3 lead in the 6th inning in International Falls last night, but the game was called because of field conditions and the score reverted back to the fifth inning and the Warriors ended up losing 3-2. Cody Willis had a triple and Cole Knudson and Kenny Benham each had a double to lead the hitters. Luke Benson allowed only four hits and two earned runs on the mound.

2. ATHLETES: This Saturday there will be a weightlifting demonstration in the gym and a National Strength and Conditioning Association person here to also talk about nutrition and plyometrics. They will be bringing students from Northfield High School to demonstrate. The program starts at 3:00. Wear workout clothes as they will be working individually with both coaches and athletes and a 12 lb steel bar. This is an excellent opportunity for anyone wanting to make themselves and their team better!

3. Please excuse the volleyball players for a meeting next Wednesday. A list will follow. Also…..Warrior gals please make every effort to go to the weight lifting clinic on Saturday, May 1st from 3:00 – 7:00pm.

4. Anyone interested in joining the Deer River High School Bowling team needs to sign up in the high school office.

3. There will be NO junior high or varsity boys’ golf practice today.

4. The JH baseball team split a double header with Greenway last night. DR beat Greenway’s 7th grade team behind a strong pitching performance by Ben Eby. Ben allowed one hit and struck out eight. At the plate Kole Schultz led the Warriors hitting attack going 2-3 with 3 RBI’s and a run scored. Spencer Tibbetts was 2-4 with a stolen base. In the 8th grade the Warriors fell 11-4. Ben Eby, Dylan Latvala, and Colten Hines each had a hit for the Warriors. The JH baseball team records stands at 2-2-1.

5. The Warrior baseball team lost a tough 6-5 game to Greenway last night in Marble. The Warriors out hit the Raiders 10-8 but came up on the short end of the run column. Travis Kane led the Warrior hitters going three for three with a double and triple. Luke Benson and Damon Benham had two hits each.

6. Events for today:

3. There will be a 9th grade girl’s basketball meeting during advisory in Mr. Marleau’s room.

Athletic/Activities Information:

1. On Friday, the girls golf team finished 1st at their Northern Pines Golf meet. The boys finished with a tie for 2nd. Eastan Marleau finished in 2nd placed overall for the boys.

2. The Warrior baseball team won the Deer River Invitational Tournament Saturday by defeating BEST 19-5 in their first game and Northland Remer 7-4 in the Championship game. Cody Willis was the winning pitcher in the first game scattering five hits while striking out five and walking two. Lucas Benson was the winning pitcher in the championship game, scattering eight hits while striking out five and did not walk a batter. The Warriors played excellent defense in the Northland game making several nice plays including two double plays. Luke Benson and Jack Carter led the hitters in the first game with three hits each. Nine different players had hits. In the second game, Kenny Benham, Cody Willis, and Ethan Stangland had two hits each. Ty Vickerman had a two run triple to drive in two runs and give the Warriors a 3-0 lead as Deer River defeated Northland whose record was 6-1 coming into the game.

3. $5000-$10,000 scholarship for seniors planning to major in a health care field. Application must be completed and submitted online. Go to www.Tylenol.com/scholarship for more information and to apply online. Application deadline is May 14, 2010. A Deer River student was awarded this scholarship in the past!

4. Leadership Summer Opportunity – People to People is sponsoring a variety of leadership summits. Cost ranges from $2295 to $3495 plus the cost of transportation. You must be nominated by DRHS to go. See Mrs. Moll if you are interested in being nominated for this summer opportunity. A limited number of scholarships are available from People to People.

5. Scholarship for seniors planning to major in Sports Medicine. MSHSL announces 2 $2500 scholarships for senior athletes planning to major in sports medicine. Deadline for application is May 15, 2010. See Mrs. Moll for more information.

6. Bass Lake Association Scholarship – seniors may apply. Deadline is April 30th. Requires that senior has a parent who owns property on Bass Lake or Little Bass Lake. Application materials are available in the counseling office.

If you want to meet new people from around the United States, see historic sites, fly to Washington, D.C., and above all, have an experience of a lifetime, this might be something you would like to do. Any sophomores interested in Close-Up 2011 next year need to sign up in the office or Mr. Drott’s door. If you have any questions just ask any of the students that went in the Close-Up group, Mrs. Felosi, or Mrs. Evans. We will be having a meeting on Monday, May 3rd, in Mr. Drott’s room.

3. The Warrior baseball team defeated Eveleth-Gilbert yesterday 12-1 in five innings. The Warriors scored seven times in the first inning en-route to their win. Kenny and Damon Benham led the hitters with three hits each. Damon had four RBI’s and Kenny three. Luke Benson and Cody Willis had two hits each. Travis Schultz had a two run double. Eythan Stangland gained his second pitching win of the year allowing just three hits and struck out six. One interesting stat, the Warriors didn’t walk a batter, had no errors defensively and didn’t have any strikeouts on offense.

1. The Warrior baseball team played in the Dome Friday night but lost an exciting game to Roseau 9-8. Luke Benson led the Warrior hitting attack with a double, triple, and two RBI’s. Ty Vickerman, Kenny Benham, & Eythan Stangland also had two hits each. Travis Kane allowed only four earned runs in 4 2/3 innings of pitching. Eythan Stangland pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings. The B squad played Roseau in St. Cloud on Friday afternoon and defeated the Rams 11-6. Damon Benham and Eric Lind had two hits each. One of Eric’s was a triple. Jack Carter and Damon Benham combined pitching duties for the win.

Eythan Stangland hit a two run home run in the second inning. Eythan had three RBI’s. Cole Knudson, Cody Willis and Damon Benham had two hits each. Cody Willis was the winning pitcher with relief help from Kenny Benham.

Junior/Senior Information:

1. 11th grade students – FREE leadership academy! The Rotary Youth Leadership Academy would like to provide 1 DRHS Junior with the FREE chance of a life time to learn leadership skills and have some FUN at a FREE camp experience for youth leaders. This is a terrific, fun and FREE way to build your college and scholarship resume. See Mrs. Moll if you would like to be considered for this terrific FREE Leadership Academy.

2. Paid Internship – Grand Village is looking for junior or senior students who are interested in pursuing health care careers to work full or part time at Grand Village as an intern. This position will pay $9.00 per hour (pending final grant approval). Application deadline in May 5th. See Mrs. Moll for application materials or more information.

3. $5000-$10,000 scholarship for seniors planning to major in a health care field. Application must be completed and submitted online. Go to www.Tylenol.com/scholarship for more information and to apply online. Application deadline is May 14, 2010. A Deer River student was awarded this scholarship in the past!

4. Leadership Summer Opportunity – People to People is sponsoring a variety of leadership summits. Cost ranges from $2295 to $3495 plus the cost of transportation. You must be nominated by DRHS to go. See Mrs. Moll if you are interested in being nominated for this summer opportunity. A limited number of scholarships are available from People to People.

5. Scholarship for seniors planning to major in Sports Medicine. MSHSL announces 2 $2500 scholarships for senior athletes planning to major in sports medicine. Deadline for application is May 15, 2010. See Mrs. Moll for more information.

6. Bass Lake Association Scholarship – seniors may apply. Deadline is April 30th. Requires that senior has a parent who owns property on Bass Lake or Little Bass Lake. Application materials are available in the counseling office.

7. Cosmetology Careers Unlimited – school visit day in Hibbing – April 22nd at 6:00 pm. RSVP by email to staciem@coscareers.com
