Thursday, October 22nd

1. **NOTICE** Classes will be dismissed at 1:15 p.m. tomorrow (Friday).

2. PICTURE RETAKE DAY – Thursday, October 29th – Sign up in the office.

3. Due to some students having health issues, please do not use body spray or perfumed sprays in school!

4. There will be an 8th grade ETS meeting today during advisory in the Boys & Girls Club room.

5. Itasca Community College will host our second “Anishinabe Day” Career Fair on Wednesday, November 18, 2009, 10am-2pm, Davies Hall Theater and lobby. We will feature FAFSA training, career exploration, and lunch. This year ICC is inviting nearby colleges and universities to set up recruitment tables. Sign up with Gerald White in Indian Education.

6. The Itasca County Family YMCA has a FREE after-school tutoring program. It is open Monday through Thursday from 3:30-5:30 p.m. as long as there is school. No appointment is necessary you just drop in and bring your homework!

7. Help Wanted – Looking for dependable students with Nursing Assistant certificate. Call Patricia MacDonell at Spectrum Homecare for more information: 218-326-4202.

8. This week is “Teen Read Week”. The entries for the book jacket/illustration contest and the tech talk contest is today. Make sure to check out the flyers around the school or stop by the Media Center for your own copy of the rules. To participate in drawings for books, gift certificates, and pizza all you have to do is check out books, take AR tests, or nominate your favorite author or book.

9. Any senior who has not received their graduation packet, please see Theresa in the office.

10. Senior pictures for the yearbook are due November 6th.

11. 10th and 11th grade Native American students can apply to be a part of College Horizons. 5 day summer program in Hawaii, Wisconsin or Tacoma, WA. At College Horizons, you will get a “crash course” in preparing for college. For more information and for application materials, go to www.collegehorizons.org. The application deadline is February 10, 2010.

Athletic/Activities Information:

1. Boys Basketball players in grades 9-12 see Mr. Anderson sometime this week about ordering jackets, bags, and warm ups. The order will go in Monday so you need to see Mr. Anderson this week.

2. Boys Basketball Cheerleading tryout practices will be through tomorrow from 3:30 – 5:30 p.m. Tryouts will be held tomorrow at 4:00 p.m.

Junior/Senior/Scholarship Information:

1. The following college representatives will be visiting DRHS:
St. Scholastica (Duluth) Oct. 26 – 10:30
Bemidji State – Nov 3 – 9:00
Fond du Lac – Nov 10 – 10:00

2. Plan to attend Experience Itasca: Wednesday, November 4th from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Center for Continued Learning – Backes Student Center. Please call or e-mail (cperry@itascacc.edu) Candace Perry at 218-322-2340 or 1-800-996-6422 if you want to attend. You can also register to attend on their website at www.itascacc.edu just click on the visit campus menu item on the front page.

3. $500-$1,000 scholarships are available to seniors. History buff? Enjoy politics? The Washington Crossing Foundation offers scholarships to seniors. All information and applications available at www.gwcf.org or call 215-949-8841. The deadline is January 15th.

4. Most Valuable Student Scholarship – Elks National Foundation will award 18 top scholarships ranging from $8,000 to $60,000 over four years. Runners-up will receive 482 – $4,000 scholarships. Available to High School Seniors – Deadline is November 2nd. Applications are available at www.elks.org/enf/scholars

5. AXA Achievement Scholarship – $10,000 or $250,000 scholarships available. Have you been a community leader? Have you led a project that benefits others? Have you overcome personal challenges? Learn more and download an application at: www.axa-achievement.com. The deadline is December 15th.

6. Northern Michigan University – scholarships range from full-tuition, plus room and board to $500 per year. Must attend Northern Michigan University to receive scholarship. Deadline is November 1-2. More information: www.nmu.edu/presidentialscholars

7. Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership Seminar. The cost of attendance for the seminar is $150.00. DRHS is invited to nominate one outstanding sophomore to the HOBY Leadership Seminar. If you would like to be considered for this nomination, please return a current Student Data Form to Mrs. Moll in the counseling office.

8. The University of St. Thomas offers two full-tuition and two $8000 renewable Science, Mathematics and Engineering Scholarships for the 2010-2011 school year. Students must attend the University of St. Thomas. More information and an online scholarship are available at www.stthomas.edu/scischolar. The application deadline is Tuesday, December 1st, 2009.

9. US Bank $1000 scholarship awarded in random drawing. Forty will be awarded. Apply October through March at www. usbank.com/studentloans (US Bank will use scholarship application information to solicit student loan business.)
