Next year's graduating class (year of 2010) will mark the 100th graduating class from Deer River Schools. As stated in the 1910 Itasca News,
"School is out and now is the commencement for those who, closing with successful honors pass out of the high school, where from the first grade on up through the succeeding years they have been boys and girls. Now comes the commencement of their future careers when as men and women they must step out into the world and choose their trade, profession or calling, into higher schools of learning."
Students graduating that year were Martha McDonald, Vernon Seaman, Stafford King, and Pearle Phillips.
To commemorate 100 years of graduating students, Deer River Schools has planned a few events for the upcoming year. It is our hope that alumni and community members plan to participate and celebrate along with current students.
This summer, during the Wild Rice Festival, memorabilia including old school pictures, newspaper clippings, and artifacts will be on display in the high school commons for public viewing. During this time, specifically from 2-4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, July 11th and 12th, past students are invited to share their reminiscences of school days. The stories will be audio taped and possibly used in a video showing the progress of the school from beginning to now. Any alumni or community members with photographs or other memorabilia to share for this event are asked to call the high school office at 246-8241. All photographs or memorabilia will be returned upon request.
Then, during Homecoming 2009, alumni are asked to attend the coronation and pepfest on Wednesday, October 14th. The current DRHS student council is planning a "bigger and better" event to include alumni.
All alumni are asked to fill out the alumni survey database that the school district has started. The goal is to create a large database of past students (including addresses and current interests) to assist in communicating school news and providing data for reunion committees. The survey can be found by clicking on the alumni tab at www.isd317.org.
Additional events are being planned. If you are interested in helping plan 100th anniversary of the first graduating class activities or just have memorabilia to share, please call 246-8241.
