Will the H1N1 virus spread and force the school to close down?

Chances are very slim that such a thing would occur. So far, most in Minnesota who have gotten the H1N1 virus have recovered without complications and have experienced typical flu symptoms.

How is H1N1 spread?

H1N1 spreads just like any virus, when a person with the flu coughs or sneezes.

What can I do to reduce my chances of getting it?

Wash your hands with soap and water often throughout the day. Be sure you cover your own coughs and sneezes and be sure to remind others to do that as well. Sneeze into your arm or elbow instead of your hands. Do not share personal items such as water bottles or food. Get vaccinated for the flu and H1N1; talk to your doctor about when  the vaccine will be available.

How do I know if I have it?

Flu-like symptoms include a fever of 100 degrees, cough and/or sore throat. Additional symptoms that may occur are runny nose, headache, body aches, vomiting and diarrhea. The symptoms are the same for H1N1 as well as seasonal flu.

How soon should a child return to school if he or she has been sick?

Students with flu-like symptoms need to stay home for at least 24 hours AFTER their fever is gone without the use of fever-reducing medicines (this illness usually requires staying home for 5 to 7 days). This will help to ensure that the flu virus is not spread to others.

Please contact the school nurse Mary Holsman by calling 246-8241, if you have questions about your child and the flu at school.
